As we reach the halfway point in our Integrated Farm Planning Project, it’s an ideal time to reflect on what we’ve achieved and the invaluable experiences shared along the way. This initiative has brought together farmers, growers, and industry experts to explore meaningful ways to enhance farm planning and sustainability. The journey so far has been inspiring, collaborative, and incredibly rewarding.
What We’ve Covered
The project has delved into a wide range of modules designed to provide practical, actionable insights for farm planning. These include:
- People Management: Building resilient teams and leaders
- Overview of Farm Planning: Understanding the key components of a resilient farm plan.
- Mapping: Using tools to better understand land use and improve decision-making.
- Biodiversity: Identifying opportunities to enhance native habitats and ecosystems.
- Soil Health: Techniques to maintain and improve soil productivity.
- Market-Driven Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS): Adapting to regulations and market demands.
Each module has been delivered by expert speakers who have shared practical strategies that participants can implement in their own operations.
Feedback: Practical Knowledge in Action
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project has been hearing from participants about how they plan to put what they’ve learned into practice. Farmers and growers have shared their intentions to implement new approaches to biodiversity, soil management, and team leadership—proof that the sessions have delivered real, actionable value.
We’ve worked hard to ensure that every session includes practical, hands-on information that can be immediately applied. It’s encouraging to see that this focus on practicality is resonating with participants and driving meaningful changes on the ground.
Building Connections and Sharing Ideas
Meeting and working alongside such a diverse group of farmers and growers has been a highlight of the project. It’s inspiring to see people taking time out of their busy schedules to engage, share ideas, and learn from one another. Their commitment and openness have created a strong sense of community and collaboration.
We’ve also had excellent support from industry groups such as DairyNZ, Fonterra, and Zespri. Their insights and participation have added depth to the sessions and reinforced the value of collective efforts in achieving sustainable outcomes.
Field Days
Our field days have provided a fantastic opportunity for hands-on learning, taking participants to some impressive farms and orchards. Seeing real-world examples of innovative practices has been invaluable. Fortunately, the weather has been kind to us for most of these events, making the experience even better.
We’ve fine-tune, originally we planned three separate field days for each sector, but we’ve decided to combine them. This change accommodates those working across multiple sectors, fosters cross-sector learning, and ensures robust attendance.
Looking Ahead
The first half of the project has been incredibly positive, and we’re excited about what’s to come. With more modules, field days, and opportunities for collaboration, the next chapter promises to build on the momentum we’ve created together.
