The Dairy Effluent Storage Calculator (DESC) is a software tool created by Massey University and Horizons Regional Council, to help determine the effluent storage requirements for a dairy farm.
Many dairy farmers approach us to help them determine the storage requirements when installing a new effluent system. It is important to consider that the final report provided is intended to be used as part of the decision-making process, not just as a final figure.
Having sufficient storage for the effluent generated on farm means that the irrigation of effluent can be deferred if soil conditions are too wet. This also enables irrigation at a time that suits the daily management of the farm and is adequate for each type of soil (deferred irrigation), maximising the nutrient value of the effluent.
Deferred irrigation involves storing effluent in a suitable lined storage facility and applying it strategically during periods of soil water deficit, minimising risks of surface runoff and maximising the use of nutrients for plants.
Once the information is entered into the DESC, the software provides a report with important information that include:
- Required storage volumes
- Cumulative distribution frequency of required storage volumes
- Residual storage volumes
- Effluent volumes
- Irrigation days
- Solids
This report can then be used to support a resource consent application for the discharge of dairy effluent.
